First race of the year for us started on a high note while working with a new driver of TJ DeCaire. TJ has proven himself as a contender the last few years, so we reached out to him after our original deal got pushed to later in the year with another driver.

We spoke with TJ for the first time on the phone a few days before the race, and from that point, our plans were set to go racing. Meeting him on Thursday at the racetrack with no prior testing, we had to get him fitted to the car. Cordele Motor Speedway is a track that he has never raced in a full-bodied stock car before, so there was lots of newness for him to get adjusted to, let alone the car, team, and tire that Hoosier brought.
Thursday, we focused our time on race runs and getting TJ comfortable with the drivability, while also learning the new tire. Each run got us a little closer to TJ’s liking. From there, we turned our attention to Friday, raceday.
Friday was our time to find qualifying speed. We had our struggles getting a mock run in, so we entered qualifying with a little uncertainty, yet we were confident in the racecar and driver. In a field of highly competitive cars, TJ clocked in 11th of 26 with a 16.064, only .166 off the pole.
The sun set, and it was time to go racing for 100 laps. For the first half of the race, TJ hung around the top 10 until it was time to go. He jumped inside the top 8 and cautions in the last 25 laps of the race allowed the driver to make aggressive moves and gain track position. By the final restart with 3-to-go, TJ was up to 5th. With his spotter, Eric Roll, the pair narrowly avoided trouble right ahead of them on the last lap, and TJ slipped by to take home a third-place finish. However, he got clipped in the RR which cut the tire. Luckily, we did not get a yellow on the last lap because the tire was flat by the time TJ got around to the front stretch podium.
This weekend would not have been possible in the first place without Scott Smith and #CadillacRanch. We had issues with our trailer, and Scott stepped up and allowed us to take his rig for the weekend.
Next, to our small team of Alex, Tanner, Chelsea, Jason, Bobby, Brett, and Marcie; thank you for all the hard work and late nights to bring a good car to the racetrack. Additionally, thank you to Eric Roll for spotting TJ and calling a great race for him.
We’re looking forward to our next outing with the #15 car and the momentum we built.
